More Rural Stories

#ruralstories Mine is a common migrant story with a less common feature: rural life.

As an Indian, born and raised in South Africa, my family migrated to Australia in the early 2000s. My parents were teachers and having arrived in Australia, found jobs at a small local school – FCJ College – in Benalla. Back then, migrants stayed in the major cities to be close to community. But my parents made the courageous decision to move to Benalla, and so our lives changed.

Benalla welcomed us with open arms. Local organisations helped us settle in, and local people became friends. This was my first experience of rural living – dependable, unconditional support that transcends difference. As I moved through school and became involved in sporting, musical, and other volunteering pursuits, this ethos became a natural part of life.

However, when I reached the end of my schooling, it became apparent to me that life beyond Benalla – through higher-education – was going to be challenging. While I was wonderfully supported by the town and my school community, the resources and connections required was at another level. Living expenses alone created a barrier that was hard to overcome.

Youthrive Victoria – then the Helen Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation – changed my life. I was encouraged to apply by my teacher, and with the support of the school and local community, I was successful in receiving a University Scholarship. This scholarship opened the doors of Monash University and allowed me to immerse myself in campus life and the rigorous demands of a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Science.

Despite being surrounded by people, it is easy to feel isolated in a big city campus. Like many students coming from the country, making this transition was not easy. Youthrive Victoria was the pillar that guided me through my university years. The unconditional support I received created a well-spring of trust – with all the characteristics of community support that my family received in Benalla all those years ago.

Since graduating from University, I have worked in Government, public affairs and corporate advisory, most recently as Senior Adviser to the Treasurer of Victoria. Despite receiving my scholarship in 2012, it is a testament to Youthrive Victoria’s culture and impact that I remain involved after all these years! Many young people in my cohort have gone on to take leading roles in their fields and remain active members as well.
